Background of the Study

Storytelling has long served as a vehicle for cultural transmission in Akure South, providing a medium through which community history, values, and traditions are passed from one generation to the next. In an era dominated by rapid technological advancements and formal education, oral traditions are increasingly at risk of being overshadowed by modern narratives (Olayinka, 2023). Storytelling in this region encapsulates a diverse array of themes—from mythological tales to accounts of historical events—and serves to strengthen communal bonds (Ajayi, 2024). However, the influence of mass media and digital technology has altered the way stories are told and received. While some scholars view these changes as a dilution of traditional forms, others argue that digital platforms can also facilitate a broader dissemination of cultural narratives (Falade, 2025). This study investigates how storytelling practices in Akure South have evolved, evaluating both the challenges and opportunities presented by modern communication technologies. It aims to highlight the continuing relevance of oral traditions while exploring innovative approaches to sustain and revitalize this critical aspect of cultural heritage (Ibrahim, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

The traditional art of storytelling in Akure South is facing decline as modern media and formal education systems increasingly dominate communication channels (Olatunde, 2023). As oral narratives lose prominence, there is a risk that crucial cultural information may not be effectively transmitted to younger generations. This decline has raised concerns among cultural custodians regarding the preservation of community identity and heritage. The study, therefore, seeks to examine the factors contributing to this decline and identify methods to reinforce the role of storytelling in cultural transmission (Akinyele, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To evaluate the current state of traditional storytelling practices.

2. To examine the influence of modern communication on oral traditions.

3. To propose methods for revitalizing storytelling as a tool for cultural transmission.

Research Questions:

1. How have modern communication methods affected traditional storytelling?

2. What role does storytelling play in preserving cultural heritage?

3. How can traditional storytelling be revitalized in Akure South?

Research Hypotheses:

1. H1: Modern media negatively impacts traditional storytelling practices.

2. H2: Effective storytelling is positively correlated with cultural identity preservation.

3. H3: Community-led initiatives can revive traditional storytelling.

Significance of the Study

This study underscores the importance of storytelling in maintaining cultural continuity. Its findings will aid educators, cultural practitioners, and policymakers in designing interventions that integrate modern media with traditional oral narratives, thereby preserving cultural heritage (Ajayi, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is confined to investigating storytelling practices and their role in cultural transmission within Akure South Local Government Area, Ondo State.

Definitions of Terms:

• Storytelling: The art of conveying narratives orally.

• Cultural Transmission: The process by which cultural knowledge is passed across generations.

• Oral Tradition: Culturally significant narratives shared by word of mouth.
